She wanted to make it, so she did.

This is my friend Kate.  Isn’t she beautiful?  She’s just as beautiful on the inside too.  And crafty beyond words!  But guess what!?!?  She didn’t even realize she had a crafty bone in her body until 3 months ago.

Kate and her husband wanted to update their home by adding some wainscoting in the hallway.  Instead of hiring out the work they decide to tackle the project together.  Not knowing what they were doing, they spent some time together doing research online and putting together their plan.  Look how awesome it turned out!!!

Well that project sparked something inside Kate that she didn’t know was there.  I can totally relate to what she felt.  I remember when I took a beginning sewing class at the local college with some friends 7 years ago.  That class started out as just a way to hang out with the girls and get away from diapers and poop.  While everyone else was having fun sewing the apron the teacher was helping us with, I was experiencing a stirring deep inside my heart.  That class ignited my passion and set free all the pent up creative energy I had been stuffing for years.  I still think about where I would be if I hadn’t taken that class.

OKKKKK back to Kate.  Gezzzzz let me make this all about me right!?!? hahaha  So she and her husband enjoyed the wainscoting (just for the record soooooo not how I would have spelled that word) project sooooo much that they decided to try another project!

Kate loves her some Pottery Barn but not the Pottery Barn prices.  Ahhhh a girl after my own heart.  She had been admiring a coffee table she saw in one of their magazines and wondered if she and her hubby could make it.  A little research and some help from Ana White they made this AMAZING coffee table one weekend for a tenth of what it would cost to buy at Pottery Barn!!!  Ana White has an amazing website where you can get free and easy DIY furniture plans!!

That was three months ago.  Kate has become a manic (I mean that in the most loving way) measuring and cutting and making something out of any piece of wood she can get her hands on!  I’m just so in love with her I can do it attitude.  She didn’t let fear stand in her way.  She wanted to make some cool stuff, did some research, taught herself, and did it.  That’s what I think is just so beautiful about Kate.  She wanted to make it so she did.  Check out some of the other things she has created, keeping in mind the first piece of wood she ever cut was in August!!! and I’m not talking August 2003, I’m talking like 90 days ago!!

So when Kate invited me over the other day to make something I was soooo there!!!  Our love of wood and power tools couldn’t keep us apart any longer!  All she said was bring some wood.  Done.  Don’t I wish all my life requests were this easy!  I’m sure when I pulled up and dragged out my three random sized pieces of beat up, nails sticking out wood, Kate was probably rethinking the invitation!!  But she was awesome!  We talked and thought and measured and cut and turned my random wood into a giant frame!!!

I literally skipped to my truck with my new frame.  Actually it was a little too heavy to carry and skip but I wanted too!!!  I was soooo happy with it!!!  I hadn’t spent a dollar yet I felt like I just won something free out of a West Elm catalog!  Favorite store EVERRRRR by the way.  That and Anthropologie, can’t afford either one but love them!

Button Bird DesignsOh I had big plans for that frame!!!

I decided to make a giant chalkboard!!  I wanted one in the hallway between my kids rooms so I could leave them messages or quotes or bible verses that they would read each day.  A little way of getting in their brains without them knowing it!!!!  A way of balancing out all the horrible music I make then listen to.  I’m sneaky like that!

I loveeee my chalkboard and the kids are having a blast with it to!  Lilly even asked if she could be the next person to pick and write out the next bible verse.  Ummmmm Yes Please!!!  Thank you Kate for your time and your inspiration and your just do it attitude.  You inspire me to think outside the box and inspire me to keep growing!! You rock!!

How exciting to see a friend blossom like that!! Her whole house has been redone! Very amazing. Please tell her we are very proud of their work. It looks great!! I can’t believe she even made more than her house things !! Enough to sell!! I really like your chalkboard and the scraps of wood made into a door type frame. I sooo want something like this to hang on my plain firewall door. It is cheap, plain boring. And flameproof. But I want to dress it up as I can see it peeking through all the way from the front door. I just think there’s no old wood like that where I live. If there is I am not privy to its location!!! And I KNOW I’m not gifted with a saw. I totally wrecked cutting up the filet mignon’s for my butcher, my MIL. Since then, I’ve just figured electric saws and I should part ways. So I’m so totally proud of your chalkboard and the verses and words of wisdom. Awesome!!!

THanks Gwen!!! That’s funny that you and the electric saw have parted ways!! hahahaha! Yes it is excited to watch her continue to create and make new things. She is redoing her whole house with things she is making! So awesome!!
      lots of love

This was such an inspiring post – I so loved it and found myself stirring inside too! I could really relate to your story about the sewing class! Just thinking about taking one makes me feel that way too! There is a shop around the corner that has a 4 week (once a week class) for $250 but I think that is way too much! Maybe I will just have to get some books and get on the machine!! Anyway, thanks for the inspiration here – all the stuff pictured is beautiful and as I said sooooo inspiring as are your posts – I love your blog!!

    • angela November 2, 2013 at 12:08 pm #

Ohhhhhh maria take that class!!!!! I know 250.00 is a ton of money but it will be sooooo worth it! Think of all the birthday and Christmas gifts you can make. It will actually pay for itself!! I tried to teach myself different things but something about hands-on training makes all the difference in the world.

There’s just one thing missing thou,,,,,,,,you need to convince her to start a blog so she can share all of these amazing things with us on a regular basis. I love her style.
