I try to do my part for the environment. I am farrrrrr from perfect but I found four simple things I can do to cut down on waste.
1. I always use my cloth bags at the grocery store. When I forget and have to use plastic, I am shocked at how many they use. Multiple that by all the people in the world that are going to the grocery store on a weekly basis. Lots of plastic bags.
2. I don’t buy juice boxes or caprisuns. For the most part my kids drink water or milk. I know milk comes in plastic bottles but you have to start somewhere. Sometimes if we are having a cookout with lots of kids I will grab a box of caprisuns, but once again I am shocked a the waste that these drinks create.
3. We stopped buying bottled water for the house. Now if you see me at the gas station and I am paying for a bottle of water don’t give me a dirty look. I do get thirsty. We don’t buy it for the house anymore. Those plastic bottles add up quick in the recycle bin.
4. I try to use things that are headed for the trash for art projects. For example…..
| Grab some plastic bottles that are headed for the recycle bin (the above plastic water bottle is my husband’s). |
| Find a beautiful assistant that carries around a pretend cell phone. You will need Modge Podge or watered down Elmer’s glue, and a foam brush or paint brush. |
| Tear small pieces of paper from a newspaper, old book, or pretty crafting paper. |
| Brush on the Modge Podge and press the paper on the bottle. |
| To antique your bottle use Valspar antiquing glaze (found at Lowes) or use watered down brown paint. Yes that is a Kid’s Cuisine meal tray. Another area that I could work on, but I do reuse the trays. Only the best for my kids! |
| Brush on the glaze and then wipe with a damp paper towel. |
| The glaze adds dimension and gives the bottles an old, antique look. |
| Pick some flowers from your garden, or if you are like me and kill everything that grows in dirt, make some flowers using left over scrapes and buttons. |
| One less bottle in the land fill and a smile on someone’s face when you give as a gift! |
