I was driving to work the other day and listening to the 90′s station on my radio. While driving it’s either completely silent or I have my music as loud as it will go. There’s no in between. On occasion, my kids have even asked me to please turn down the music. I like my music loud and always have. This is why at the age of 39 I need hearing aids. I am not exaggerating.
So I was listening to music that was taking me back to my high school and college days. I was in a fun mood ready for an awesome day at work. I pulled up to a red light when the song OPP by Naughty by Nature came on. Do you remember this song!?!?! Not the most appropriate song in the world if you really listen to the lyrics. You know….
You down with OPP (Yeah you know me)
Who’s down with OPP (Every last homie)
Let me go ahead and say that my taste in music is still that of a 15 year old. I wish I could say that I have Mumford and Sons, the Civil Wars, and the Avett Brothers on my music mix, but really it’s more like Katy Perry, Maroon Five, and Pink.
So I’m at the red light, windows down, and OPP is turned up loud enough that my blown speaker is rattling! I have blown the speakers out of every car I’ve owned! I might even be singing a word or two of the song out loud. My truck is like a dance club on wheels. All I need is some strobe lights and some glow sticks. While I’m OPPing I happen to look over at the Rent-a-Center truck that has pulled up beside me. There are two guys in their early 20s up front. The one in the passenger seat looks miserable. He is looking off into space and has the most annoyed look on his face. He’s clearly not happy and looks as if he could kill someone. Then I glance at the driver. He is dancing around in his seat singing the words to OPP like he wrote the song. He is in his own little world having a blast behind the steering wheel. He was having more fun at that red light than most people have all week.
It was at that moment that it dawned on me. Life is what you make it. You can either sing along to OPP and enjoy the ride or you can be annoyed by OPP and miss out on a lot of fun. I’m sure those two guys didn’t have dreams of driving a Rent-a-Center truck when they grew up. But the driver was making the most out of his situation. He was living a joy filled life.
Some other truly inspiring people are the people that dance behind the weather reporters in severe storms. They.crack.me.up. Only complete happiness and joy will make you think that dancing in the middle of a hurricane, shirtless, making a fool of yourself on camera is a good idea. While everyone else is bracing for the storm these people are dancing in the middle of it.
Love these guys!
I have decided that I want to live my life like the driver in the Rent-a-Center truck. Who knew that Naughty by Nature or those storm dancing fools could inspire me to embrace a life full of love, laughter, and fun. Thank you silly people for opening my eyes to the fun that is all around.
How are you going to live today? Bracing for the storm or dancing in the middle of it?
