The kitchen that was suppose to make me cook.

 Before

Painted kitchen cabinets

It’s been almost 3 months since I painted my kitchen cabinets.  I loveeeeeee the new cabinets and so far the paint has held up great.

Painted kitchen cabinets

We finally painted the green walls a fresh light grey!!!   Painted kitchen cabinets

Painted kitchen cabinets I hung pieces of old wood around the kitchen to give it a old distressed barn feel.    I would love to distress and ding up the cabinets but my husband would definitely kill me, so I’m just going to stick to the wood pieces.

Painted kitchen cabinets

I finally broke down and bought a Keurig.  I had decided against it until I saw this color and I was instantly sold!  I’m such a sucker for Turquoise. Painted kitchen cabinets

And my new favorite addition to my kitchen!!!  My bestest friend Tonya gave me this clock that she made out of old pieces of wood!  Ahhhhhh it makes me sooooo happy every time I look at it!  I love to incorporate handmade gifts from friends into my home.

Painted kitchen cabinets Here’s the back in case you are interested in grabbing some scrape wood and making your own.  You can get the clock parts at Hobby Lobby or Michael’s and they’re so simple to install.

Painted kitchen cabinets So with my kitchen finally finished I am beyond happy with how it turned out.  I am cooking a little bit more just because I love spending time in this space.  Pinterest has become my new online cookbook!  If you have a favorite cookbook that is good for beginners please let me know!!!

Decorating styles, Husband vs. Wife

drop cloth curtains

This is my husband’s office.

art studio

This is my office.  Do you see a slight difference in our decorating styles!?!?

Yeah we have a little bit of an issue when it comes to decorating our home.  He likes things neutral and simple and large T.Vs.  I love color and paintings and pattern and art.  I have run out of space to hang things on the walls so I have started hanging things on the furniture.  But we live together so we have to find a happy medium, we have to compromise.

drop cloth curtains

It started with these chairs a couple of months ago in our living room.  We wanted two chairs on both sides of the T.V. so we had more room for people when they came over to hang out.  We could NOT compromise on anything.  I wanted loud colorful patterned chairs and he wanted boring brown chairs.   I finally found these at World Market on sale.

The off white/brownish linen fabric made him happy and the colorful buttons made me happy.

When we finally compromised on new paint for the house last week, I was a little worried about what to do about the curtains.  The old ones weren’t going to work with the new grey color.  I was very eager to make a trip to Mary Jo’s Cloth store and pick out some wild colorful fabric.  If you haven’t been to Mary Jo’s, it’s like a Lowe’s only all fabric.  Paradise.  But I have to admit that the non pattern chairs were really growing on me and I wanted the living room to be a room he loved too.  So I had an idea, a very foreign, outrageous idea.

drop cloth curtains

Many hours spent in the paint section at Lowe’s, I have always loved and admired the drop cloths!!  I know that sounded even weirder when I typed it out.  These drop cloths were 13.99 each and were the exact color of the chairs, and they were huge!  You can barley buy two yards of fabric for 13.99!!!  Plus these drop clothes are so thick you didn’t need a liner and they already were hemmed so no sewing.  Buy and ready to hang.

Clip thingies.

I folded over the drop cloth in little sections to create pleats.

???????????????????????????????

They were a little long but that wasn’t anything a pair of scissors couldn’t handle.  Since I wanted them to puddle on the floor I didn’t bother hemming them after I cut off bottom.

drop cloth curtains

Very simple but cool looking curtains on the cheap!!!  I will probably get bored with them eventually but for now I kinda like the simpleness of the living room.  It feels calm and quiet.  If I need a slash of color I can go into any of the other rooms in the house (except my husband’s office)! drop cloth curtains

drop cloth curtains On to the next issue.  How am I suppose to watch t.v. when I have to deal with this.  Seriously whyyyyyy so many remotes for one T.V.!?!  I get so frustrated trying to figure out how to turn on the stinking T.V., I just give up.  No wonder I read so many books!  Anyone else have a problem with this!?!?!  Or am I the only non-working remote girl in the world!?!?!

Dining room makeover take 2

dining room makeover

So the dining room table was a little toooo green.  A little toooo bright green.  Even I had to agree with my husband.  With Dixie May’s help I decided to paint it againnnnnnnnn.  This time I used regular paint instead of chalk paint.  That meant I had some sanding to do.  You don’t have to get all the way down to the bare wood, just knock off the shiny finish.

I also decided to paint the side of the table too instead of just the top.

I stopped by a little boutique in Mooresville, NC called Sweet Grass and picked up this giant S with some birthday money.  It was $18.00, a little more than I like to pay for decorating stuff,  however I’ve been wanting a large S for some time.  The ones I’ve seen at antique stores and flea markets have all been more than $50.00!

My dog is a total stalker.

While I waited for the paint to dry on the table I used the same paint on the S.  Then I roughed it up with sand paper and covered it with glaze.  I wiped off the excess glaze and added a hanger.

I am sooooooo much happier with this color paint on the table.  Also thanks to you guys I got rid of the rug which makes such a huge difference!  My friend gave me the rug several years ago and it served it’s purpose but didn’t go with anything in the house.  Love the change!  It feels so bright and airy!

As I took the photos of my dining room, I realized just how much the room made me happy and was such a reflection of me and my family.   It’s full of things I love, beautiful meaningful things.  Isn’t it wonderful when a home makes you happy and makes you smile without costing a fortune?

These are a few of my favorite things.

dining room makeover

Without even realizing it, I’ve started a new collection.  I grabbed the three smaller S’s at an antique store a while ago for $1.00 each.  I made the quilt S yesterday and can’t wait to show you how easy it is!

Mason Jars

Mason jars from my grandma’s basement.  I love them all lit up at night!

dining room makeover

A needlepoint created by my grandmother.  I painted and distressed the brown frame.

dining room makeover

This is one of my favorite paintings of all time.  My mom and I saw it in a little gallery in Bristol, VA.  I fell in love with it.  My mom went back later, bought it, and gave it to me for Christmas that year!  I love you mom.

dining room makeover I bought this painting in Portland, OR years ago to remind me of the trip with my college roommates.  Just because it’s a painting of bottles does not indicate we drank a lot!  Although that was before kids and husbands and real life, so now that I think about it maybe we did do a little drinking!hahaha

dining room makeover

I have kept every piece of pottery that my kids have painted and now it’s one of my favorite and largest collections!

Something about a pretty mug makes hot tea taste even better!

One of my favorite photos of all time!

More art by my grandma and great grandma!  Special rocks from somewhere special!  Just can’t seem to remember where that somewhere special is! hahahaha

A clock from my parents and more yard sale finds, all under $1.00!

dining room makeover

My grandmother’s vase that I can still see sitting on her dining room table.

dining room makeover

I found the large brown birdcage at a yard sale for $5.00 and the silver one for $1.00.  My father in law bought me the blue cookie pot for my birthday!  The man has good taste!  I needed something for the space behind the birdcages so I tried my hand at painting.  I think I will stick to painting tables!

dining room makeover

My husband and I saved our gift certificates from our wedding and were able to buy this cabinet from Pier One almost 13 years ago.  It’s so special to me because it’s one of the first “real” pieces of furniture we bought together.  I also love that huge pot my kids painted and my $1.00 yard sale bottles.

Another one of my favorite things is this bench I rescued from my neighbors trash and painted green!  My grandma’s quilt, some handmade pillows, a couple of Christmas trees I made that never get put away, and this is one of my favorite spots in my house.

painted furniture

My parents gave me this beautiful hutch after my grandmother passed away. It holds all my favorite things.

???????????????????????????????

It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to make a home beautiful.  A beautiful home is a reflection of you and what you love.

The winners of the giveaway are…… KWolff and Sherri S!!!  Congratulations!
