Should have stuck with the vacuuming.

Painted table

So this was the scene Tuesday morning.  The kids were out of school Monday for Presidents’s Day.  Once I got them on the bus I headed on home to do a little cleaning up from the three day weekend.  This is when I get into trouble.  I will do anything to get out of cleaning my house.

I carried out the vacuum and plugged it in……that is as far as I got!  Out of the corner of my eye this table was all the sudden soooooooooo brown!!  We have had it for 6 years but it wasn’t until I plugged in the vacuum that I realized something needed to be done.

Painted table

Within seconds, like I didn’t have any control of my limbs, I had chalk paint and a paintbrush.

Painted table

Since I was using chalk paint I didn’t have to sand this heavily varnished table.  I just wiped it clean and started painting.  See my vacuum sitting there in the kitchen!?!?!

Painted table

While the first coat dried I could have started the vacuuming, but nooooooo.  All the sudden I didn’t like what I had on this wall.  I hadn’t really fixed it up since I got rid of so much out of the dining room at the Big Sale.  I found the matching shutter in the garage and brought it in.

Dining room makeover (7)

I hunted around the house for some paintings.

Painted table

Because I’m lazy this is how I installed the hanging hardware.  Hot glue gun and some pins!

Painted table

After the first coat of paint dried for about 2 hours, I lightly sanded the whole table.  I then painted on a second coat of paint.  After another two hours of drying time, I sanded and distressed the table with sandpaper right there in my dining room.  I was suppose to be cleaning my house but instead I was making mess after mess.  We didn’t use this glaze when we painted our kitchen cabinets, seemed like a good time to bust it open.

Painted table

While the glaze dried I realized all of the sudden my blue bench didn’t look right with the green top table.  Hmmmmmm…….

Painted table

Grabbed my staple gun, several pieces of batting, and some spray adhesive.

Painted table

I found this old quilt top at Metrolina Antiques and Flea Market last month for $10.00.  I hadn’t been able to find anything to use it for until now!!!

Painted table

I added several layers of the batting because it was so thin and then added the quilt top.  I turned the bench over and stapled the quilt to the bench.

Before plugging in the vacuum…..

After plugging in the vacuum…..

love my new bench!

Time to go get the kids.  Danggggg I’m tired……..and I think my table is tooooooo green.  What do you think!?!?!  Another color?  More Glaze!?!?  Help!!!  My husband gets back in town today!  I need help quick!!!  Anyone want to come over and help paint a table!?!

Should have stuck with the vacuuming!

Update!!!!  The rug was given to me from a friend several years ago.  It is coming out today.  You know how you live with something even though you don’t loveeeeeeeee it?  It just kinda serves a purpose.  I think I will be happier with just hard word floors than a rug that I don’t love.

you make me laugh every time! I love the green table and all the things you did with stuff you already had in the house! Table not too green. I’m afraid what might be bothering you is the rug. If you get a new rug, see, you won’t have to vacuum for at least another week!

Yes I hate that rug!!! Someone gave it to me a long time ago and I have just lived with it. It totally doesn’t go with anything! Maybe it will be out this afternoon! Thanks for the push!!!!

I have a rug like that too. In my front foyer, but I do need to keep it till I get another one of it will be open hard wood in a big spot. LOVE, LOVE the green. It doesn’t seem too dark, but the beauty is you can always do a white wash or something over it and if you don’t like that, paint another green coat. ;)

You are so brave! I love everything, and I do think the rug will make a difference. I am definitely going to have to plan a trip up there so I can go to Metrolina! Things are needing a breath of fresh air over here. Looking good and keep us updated.

Thanks Jackie! Yep that rug is history! You have to make a trip to Metrolina! The big one is the first weekend of April!!!!

I wouldn’t change a thing! I absolutely adore that green table. Beautiful and inspiring! I have a love/hate relationship with your blog…I love to read it, but I hate that it makes me want to change my entire house! Ha! God bless!

hahahaha! Thanks Jen!! There is a store here that I have a love hate relationship with. I love itttttttttttttttttttt but it makes me want to throw everything i own away and start over. Plus I can’t afford a thing in the place. I don’t even know why I continue to go in!
lots of love to you friend,

I am no blogger but I love flea markets, thrift stores and all the junking you do too. I am always wanting to change up something and I know how you feel about all of a sudden seeing too much dark wood. I am feeling the same way in my bedroom but I like the changes you made. Really brightens up the room and I agree with the others that the rug is what is confusing you. It no longer flows with your colors so maybe remove for now and see what overstock has cheap. I get all my rugs from there and have never been disappointed. Can’t beat the prices!! You are one talented lady. If you love it, go with it! It is YOUR house after all.

    • angela February 21, 2013 at 10:05 pm #

Overstock!!! Going to check it out now! I think that is where we just ordered our knobs for the kitchen cabinets! Super cheap! Thanks for the idea!
      lots of love Vicki!

I read this post chuckling the whole time…this is exactly what happens to me when I should be cleaning – although not usually on such a grand scale! But you never know when inspiration & the desire to change something will strike. I love that you went for it 100%! And look at what you accomplished IN ONE DAY. Besides, the dirt & clutter is very patient and always willing to wait for another time – lol. Did the vacuum cleaner complain? I think not.

I love that green table too. Before I even read a single word & discovered that it was the subject of the post, that table jumped out at me as the perfect centerpiece in your room! And the bench? Adorable…and much softer on the “cheeks” now!

Pat yourself on the back – you deserve it!

    • angela February 21, 2013 at 10:19 pm #

Ahhhhhhh thanks Kim for the encouragement!!! Hubby wasn’t as happy about the table as you! Oh well I am just going to remember that Kim liked it and forget that he doesn’t like it!hahahaha!
      lots of love

WOW! You are a brave woman to paint your dining table like that! I have been thinking and thinking about chalk painting our kitchen table. You need to let us know how it holds up. And the only way I do major redecorating/painting is when no one is home to second guess me. Hope your husband is surprised!

    • angela February 21, 2013 at 10:21 pm #

Yes we can say he was very surprised!!!!!!!!!!! and maybe not as happy as I hoped he would be. Oh well, gonna have to live with it now!hahaha!

I love everything you did to your dining room when you should have been vacuuming!
LOVE the green table, and the bench, and the decorated shutters! It all looks awesome. Wish I could scoop it all up and put it into my dining room….including the rug! : )

    • angela February 21, 2013 at 10:22 pm #

Want the rug!?!?!?! Where do you live!? It’s yours if you live in the Charlotte area! Thanks so much for your sweet encouraging comment!
let me know about the rug!

Angela! I think you’re on the right track!! It’s so fresh looking! What about doing a white-ish base for the table and then giving the top a white-wash on top of the green so it’s not “toooooooo green” for you! :)

I have a quilt that I found at a yard sale for $3 that’s similar- bigger patches, but similar!! My husband and I decided to go for a walk one Saturday morning this summer and I ended up seeing signs for a yard sale! I dragged him and our daughter down the driveway to look around- it was filled with vintage linens and old enamel flower pins! I grabbed a bunch of hand-embroidered pillowcases, the quilt, a bag of flower pins ($1!) and a few other odds and ends! I felt like I hit the jackpot!! :) Every once in awhile I drive by the house and think about stopping to see if they have any other things they want to sell! HAHA! My husband rolled his eyes at me the whole way home and couldn’t figure out why I wanted an old quilt! Now, I just need to figure out what to do with it!!

Happy redecorating! (We’re working on our bathroom right now- what a mess!!!) :)

  10. Diane February 22, 2013 at 12:24 am #

Oh I LOVE the green table. Looks so refreshing! Keep tweaking it and you will get the look you are after. I am sure removing the rug helped! Great job. To heck with housework!

  11. Mindy February 22, 2013 at 12:31 am #

I think a couple of the chairs need to be painted – to subdue the brown. How about a jute rug…or something like that.

  12. Pat Farris February 22, 2013 at 12:32 am #

I think you need to paint the whole table!!! Love it and glad you got rid of the rug!! My question is my chairs scratch my wood floors and those sticky felt tabs keep coming off!!! I have no rug under my table, What do I do to my chairs to get them to not scratch my floors!!!Thanks, Pat from Becoming!!!

I think the table looks great! And I love the bench! Becca :)

Oh my gosh! You can sure get a lot done in one day! I remember when my husband used to go out of town…I was super fast at everything…and it was sooo fun! Plus he loved all the surprises too.
Color. Hmmm. I’m not exactly a fan of seeing that much of that green. As I look at the photos of the room I see something that is more in line with those blue Ball jars. That jar color…up or down as in lighter or darker. The glazing is fun though. The bench. I’m totally in love. Totally. All your accent decor. Amazing! Love your free spirit touch with the colors. And the rug…um yeah…wood floor so much better. Wanna take a trip to PA? There’s tons of coolness here for inspiration. ‘Cause the rug would be perfect under my dining room table. :D And I’d love to hang out with you…we’d have a blast. Oh…what did your husband say????? Thumbs up or down?

  15. Laurie @ House of 34 February 22, 2013 at 1:41 am #

You are a hoot! I love that you change things around when Hubby’s not home. When my hubby leaves to go out of town, he knows something will be different when he gets home,.. :D I do like the green table. If you’re still unsure, maybe paint the whole table or lighten the table with a cream color.

    • angela February 22, 2013 at 4:58 pm #

      Hey Laurie!
Wow i wish you could have seen his face! I think I have decided to go with a lighter green. Although the whole reason I used the bright green was because it was chalk paint and I wouldnt have to sand. Hmmmmmm so if I use regular paint i will have to sand and get my house totally nasty! Maybe I like the bright green afterall!
      loveeeeeeee

What a hoot. I read your blog and was so giggling the whole time. Thank you. I love what you did, it’s very happy. I loved your picture before of the big flower before the shutters. I would make that your focal point. It’s so happy

    • angela February 22, 2013 at 4:55 pm #

Thanks Martha! I moved the my big happy flower into my sewing room. It’s one of my favorite things I ever made! i was going to try and sell it but I decided sometimes you have to keep a couple things you make!

LOVE the changes. I’d rather do what you did than vacuum too. Wish I had a day or two at home by myself. I’d get so much accomplished! Ok, maybe not, but it’s nice to dream.

Dang girl…now that is some serious showball decorating at it’s best!! Love how one thing leads to another (I swear we’re secretly related) :-) Ditch the rug, keep the green…it’s the pantone color this year too! LOVE it all!!

Hey. I was wondering if you waxed it??? My friend said when she waxed her ASP it really made the difference. It added depth to the paint. But you know what? You wouldn’t have to sand to bare wood if you want to reprint. Sand to rough up surface and use the primer and paint. A friend said the sample size would be enough to do just a table top so that’s not toooo much if hubby really wants a different color. Just a few ideas!
Plus. One thing I’ve struggled with was eliminating stuff I no longer love. But it just makes sense. Just have out what u really love
And if its a little or a lot it’s what you love!!! Ahhh. A happy home!!

This reminds me of a book…”If you give a mom a vacuum, she’ll probably ask you for some paint…” I see a whole series here!
    I love the table. Lurve.

I know you have already repainted, but for future reference, you can change the color of chalk paint by adding cheap acrylic paint ($1/tube at Walmart!). I did my daughters desk in the same green and added a tube of yellow acrylic paint to change the hue. It went on just like normal chalk paint but was the shade I wanted. I saw the newly finished product and it looks great! That was just an fyi :)
