Dining room makeover take 2

dining room makeover

So the dining room table was a little toooo green.  A little toooo bright green.  Even I had to agree with my husband.  With Dixie May’s help I decided to paint it againnnnnnnnn.  This time I used regular paint instead of chalk paint.  That meant I had some sanding to do.  You don’t have to get all the way down to the bare wood, just knock off the shiny finish.

dining room makeover

I also decided to paint the side of the table too instead of just the top.

I stopped by a little boutique in Mooresville, NC called Sweet Grass and picked up this giant S with some birthday money.  It was $18.00, a little more than I like to pay for decorating stuff,  however I’ve been wanting a large S for some time.  The ones I’ve seen at antique stores and flea markets have all been more than $50.00!

My dog is a total stalker.

While I waited for the paint to dry on the table I used the same paint on the S.  Then I roughed it up with sand paper and covered it with glaze.  I wiped off the excess glaze and added a hanger.

I am sooooooo much happier with this color paint on the table.  Also thanks to you guys I got rid of the rug which makes such a huge difference!  My friend gave me the rug several years ago and it served it’s purpose but didn’t go with anything in the house.  Love the change!  It feels so bright and airy!

As I took the photos of my dining room, I realized just how much the room made me happy and was such a reflection of me and my family.   It’s full of things I love, beautiful meaningful things.  Isn’t it wonderful when a home makes you happy and makes you smile without costing a fortune?

These are a few of my favorite things.

dining room makeover

Without even realizing it, I’ve started a new collection.  I grabbed the three smaller S’s at an antique store a while ago for $1.00 each.  I made the quilt S yesterday and can’t wait to show you how easy it is!

Mason Jars

Mason jars from my grandma’s basement.  I love them all lit up at night!

dining room makeover

A needlepoint created by my grandmother.  I painted and distressed the brown frame.

dining room makeover

This is one of my favorite paintings of all time.  My mom and I saw it in a little gallery in Bristol, VA.  I fell in love with it.  My mom went back later, bought it, and gave it to me for Christmas that year!  I love you mom.

dining room makeover I bought this painting in Portland, OR years ago to remind me of the trip with my college roommates.  Just because it’s a painting of bottles does not indicate we drank a lot!  Although that was before kids and husbands and real life, so now that I think about it maybe we did do a little drinking!hahaha

dining room makeover

I have kept every piece of pottery that my kids have painted and now it’s one of my favorite and largest collections!

dining room makeover
Something about a pretty mug makes hot tea taste even better!

dining room makeover

One of my favorite photos of all time!

dining room makeover

More art by my grandma and great grandma!  Special rocks from somewhere special!  Just can’t seem to remember where that somewhere special is! hahahaha
dining room makeover

$1.00 yard sale pitcher and a piece of embroidery displayed in a hoop.

dining room makeover

$5.00 Yard sale painting and more embroidery.

dining room makeover

My boy’s art.

A clock from my parents and more yard sale finds, all under $1.00!

dining room makeover

My grandmother’s vase that I can still see sitting on her dining room table.

dining room makeover

I found the large brown birdcage at a yard sale for $5.00 and the silver one for $1.00.  My father in law bought me the blue cookie pot for my birthday!  The man has good taste!  I needed something for the space behind the birdcages so I tried my hand at painting.  I think I will stick to painting tables!

dining room makeover

My husband and I saved our gift certificates from our wedding and were able to buy this cabinet from Pier One almost 13 years ago.  It’s so special to me because it’s one of the first “real” pieces of furniture we bought together.  I also love that huge pot my kids painted and my $1.00 yard sale bottles.

Another one of my favorite things is this bench I rescued from my neighbors trash and painted green!  My grandma’s quilt, some handmade pillows, a couple of Christmas trees I made that never get put away, and this is one of my favorite spots in my house.

painted furniture

My parents gave me this beautiful hutch after my grandmother passed away. It holds all my favorite things.

???????????????????????????????

It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to make a home beautiful.  A beautiful home is a reflection of you and what you love.

The winners of the giveaway are…… KWolff and Sherri S!!!  Congratulations!

I wouldn’t have thought, but looks great! I think painting the side of the table helped too. Love all your collections and that there are still people in the world that love things handed down from grandparents or other family. I feel that is something that seems to be going away with these young people today. That makes all of your really cool room so much more special! I feel happy when I look at it too!

    • angela March 1, 2013 at 5:10 pm #

Hi Vicki! I think painting the side helped too! and getting rid of that rug!!!

I even told my hubby about your bright green table top (your table is similar to ours) and he said he’d be mad if I did that to our table !! I showed him the photo and he just shook his head I’m sure sympathizing with your spouse.
But today I say I love it!!! Yes I like that edge painted. Plus that S is huge!!! I’d say you got a good deal. I remember my friend liking initials on walls years ago when they first came out. She couldn’t find one for her nor anyone in the family nor last name so she bought a random letter she did find. Oh we’d laugh as we’d make up words to fit the letter!!!
Yes it’s so neat that you showed us your pieces and why you love them. Very sentimental plus on display not hidden in some deep closet.

    • angela March 1, 2013 at 5:08 pm #

Oh your hubby would not like to live here! Everytime my husband goes out of town he comes back to a new little surprise! He has his office that I neverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr touch even though it would look so much better if I could do a few things! Maybe one day he will let me in there!
lots of love and tell you husband I am coming to your house to help you paint your table!hahahaha!

Sometimes we just have to have a “do over”….You know when it is just not right. We have all been there and totally understand. Glad you are happy with the new green. It is really pretty, and I am in love with the newest letter you have added to your collection. Happy Day!!! :)

    • angela March 1, 2013 at 5:06 pm #

Yes I have lots of do overs!hahaha! But that is ok, you have to try! It’s better to have a do over than to never give it a try!

I love how your house is a reflection of you… I have a quote from an artist on my kitchen cabinet that I pulled out of a Mary Engelbreit magazine years ago that says “this place is a scrapbook of my life” I really want my house to be a reflection of our family and stuff we’ve made or found and has meaning attached to it ; )
I have a collection of Gs and I too found a giant paper mache G at Sweet Grass last summer so I went back through all our old photos that had the 4 of us in them and made photocopies of them all and then decoupaged them on the front of the letter (after I painted it black) It makes me so happy to have it stare back at me from atop my jelly cabinet each meal time : )

    • angela March 1, 2013 at 5:04 pm #

Oh I love that Carey!! I use to love that magazine. I cried when they discontinued it. What a great idea to do with the giant G!
      Thanks for sharing!

The table brightens up the room. How does dinning on it feel now. I was thinking of painting my wagon wheel table white, however, I really need to get rid of it–it truly doesn’t fit in my new space and my shoulders are hurting from using it as a desk instead of four person dining table. What do you think http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/fuo/3606635947.html ?

    • angela March 3, 2013 at 12:14 pm #

Do nottttttttttttttttttt get rid of that table! It is soooooooo beautiful! Just needs a little love and some paint!!!

Thanks for your encouragement, but unfortunately this piece in my new place is pushed back into a corner and is not used for meals. Instead I type on my keyboard and my shoulders are screaming at me. (maybe its my chair?) Anyways, I have no space not even a garage to wait out the next move and see if I can use it properly then.

Love the redo – and painting the sides of the table was a super idea. I really liked the rug, but once you removed it, yep, it makes a big difference. Those sunflowers make me swoon! My sis has chairs that look exactly like those. I want to say they came from World Market. Does that sound familiar? (They are amazingly comfortable for being heavy wooden chairs.)

    So glad you shared it!
