Roots

I use to be a blond in high school. Now the older I get the darker my hair gets.  Plus I have these weird white things shooting out of my scalp.  So I had an appointment to get my hair cut and highlighted.  I realized my appointment was April 3, right in the middle of my kid’s spring break. I called to see if my sweet, hair cutter Meredith could change my appointment.  “Sure come in the 19th”.  So Monday, March 19th I excitedly, happily roll in soooooooooo ready for a haircut and color.  My roots are just plain scary.  As I walked in I noticed Meredith’s area was really dark, actually her door was locked and the lights were out.  I didn’t remember her working on Mondays.  I was hopeful….. maybe she had started working Mondays because she was so busy, maybe she ran out to grab lunch.  I sat down, flipped through a magazine and the time started creeping by and no Meredith.  I decide to text her.  Do I have the wrong day???  Turns out I had the wrong month!  She rescheduled me for April 19, not March 19!!!  There I was sitting like a dingaling a whole month early.

I have a reason for telling you this long drawn out story about my hair, no not just to bore you!  I now have a month to wait to get my hair cut and highlighted.  A. Whole. Month.  Noooooooooooo, I will not go to someone else.  Meredith can cut hair.  She can cut curly hair. And I love her.  And if she were to move to another state, guess what? Family pack your bags.  I came home Monday and realized I had a mess to deal with for a month.  Then I remembered my new fabric.

There’s this little place I like to call heaven…. actually the real name is Mary Jo’s.  It is located in Gastonia, NC and it is like a Lowe’s or Home Depot, but all fabric and notions.  The first time I went I think I heard angels singing off in the distance.  It was fabric as far as the eye could see.  I could walk though there for hours.  I made the mistake one time and took my three year old son.  That was not a fun day.

Ok so back to my roots and fabric.  I am going somewhere with this I promise.  I needed something to cover up my roots for the next 4 weeks.  Yes they are that bad.  Did I mention they were bad?  I remembered something I use to make back when I first started sewing.

 Reversible headbands!

Cut two coordinating pieces of fabric 44 inches by 3 inches.  I fold my fabric in half like this to cut, much easier.

Cut the ends at an angle for a more finished look.

Move your furniture and sewing machine outside to enjoy the beautiful spring weather.  Ignore neighbor’s stares as they drive by.

Sew right sides together, leaving a three inch opening on one side.

Cut off excess fabric around the points on both ends.

Turn inside out through the three inch opening and iron.

Top stitch around the entire headband.  This will close your three inch opening.

Lots of fun root hiders!!

My sweet friend Jamie came over right when I needed a model!!  She had no idea I was going to make her try one on and start snapping pictures of her.  She looks so beautiful!

Ok I will embarrass myself as well.  I love these for spring, and I think I will make a ton for the pool this summer too!

These hair bands are lovely! And serve a great dual purpose. Your fabrics are the perfect combo of fun and cheer. Happy day to you!

One time I went to Sally's {a cosmetology store} and bought this root cover up for the very same reason. It looks like mascara. Anyway, it worked but every time I put my fingers through my hair during the day, my fingers would end up with brown goo on them. NOT FUN! The headbands are a way better idea, believe me! These are super cute too!
