Use what you have and never throw anything away!

When I my son was born 6 years ago I went cowboy crazy!  No I didn’t start stalking cowboys, I went crazy for any kind of cowboy themed decor I could find.  It started while I was pregnant, I found 4 of these cowboy wall hangings at a consignment shop for $10.00.  As soon as I saw them I knew exactly how I would decorate for baby boy.  Yes I am one of those people that haddddddd to find out what I was having.  My mind cannot understand how some people can wait.

Now that little Wes is 6, He has totally outgrown men on horses.  He has moved on to football, Wii, and passing gas.  He received a huge Mario Cart poster for his birthday so guess what came down in order to make room for Mr. Mario!?!?

I stared at these 4 wood wall hangings for a couple of weeks, not knowing what to do with them.  I wasn’t ready to donate them, and I have never been good with selling things on Craigslist.  Then I remembered something I had done with other wall hangings that I had grown tired of or when my taste changed for the third time that year.

I grabbed my paint.
Because these were wood, I knew that if I painted them I could distressed them with sandpaper and the bottom color would show through.

I just slapped some paint on and didn’t worry to much about covering up the cowboy in the center.  I feel like the less perfect the paint job the better.  Or maybe that is just something I tell myself to make myself feel better!
After the paint dried, I took some sandpaper and gently distressed the wood.

I also added some glaze to give it an antiqued look.

I used my favorite owl pattern that I use to make the stuffed owls and cut out two from some pretty paper.

Back in November, Wes’s kindergarten teacher asked me to make 24 pilgrim outfits for his class.  As I cut out these little vests from grocery bags, this is what I had left over….

For some strange reason I couldn’t throw the leftover paper away.  It has sat on my shelf in my studio for 2 months screaming NEST, NEST, make a nest out of me.  Yes I know this is weird and I may go see a doctor about it.

If you have something hanging in your house that you don’t like or have outgrown, take it down. I believe you shouldn’t just have something hanging on a wall just to take up space.  A blank wall is better than a wall with something on it that doesn’t make you smile.  Take it down, throw some paint on it, cover it in fabric, modge podge favorite photographs to it. Let your kids paint over a painting that no longer fits your taste.  Paint those gold frames nest egg blue.  Paint that old brown piece of furniture that you are tired of looking at a bright white.  Just a little bit of paint or fabric can change something that you don’t like or use anymore into something you love.  And if you mess it up, who cares you didn’t really like it to begin with!!!!  You don’t have to go out and buy new, use what you have!!!!
