| My girlfriend the Nester sent me a text asking if I wanted this chair, if not it was going to Goodwill. My response was…”Is this a JOKE????” Of course I wanted the chair!!!! I immediately went to her house, put it in my car, and then drove directly home and put it in my sewing room. I love this chair, I spend almost every morning around 5:00am-6:00am on it. It’s my prayer, reading, mediation, and thankful chair.
I had big redo plans for the chair. I might recover it with some funky fabric, or glue yo yos all over it, maybe a doily chair. I just couldn’t decide, so I started with the legs and went from there. |
My name is Angela Statzer and I love to incorporate just about anything into my artwork. Ranging from recycled materials, vintage items, wood, jewelry, other people’s junk, buttons and fabric, my style is fun and diverse. You can find me smiling at any yard sale, thrift store or flea market. I am a momma to two amazing kids and wife to one hot husband.

You have got to be kidding me!!!! That is so incredible and absolutely beautiful. Your confidence and determination are inspiring… I get one negative comment from the peanut gallery when I'm embarking on something a little crazy I get completely discouraged. Rock on!
I have got to get sone chalk paint!
wow~! Just, wow!!
LOVE! Your amazing!!
Wow! Amazing! I would have been w/ the mailman, your husband, and your neighbors. Looks great! Jackie
So amazing!! You are such a brave painter;)
Yes Jamie!!! I used to be the same way!! Any little comment or negitivity would throw me off. I made my mind up not to listen to it anymore. It's a lot more fun when you don't care and go with your gut!

Yes Tracy you have to get some chalk paint. Have you been to the sleepy poet? I hear they sell it there, but you can also order online!

love this! saw your pin on this on pinterest and looked into it. can't wait to try it out on some thrift find or maybe my husband's chair out in the garage that is upholstered in the most awful duke blue vinyl
I was at Sleepy Poet week before Christmas and they definitely DO have chalk paint. yeah!! This was a great save! Anyone remember the old Trading Spaces where Hildy painted the upholstered couch? It was really a fail. Wrong fabric, wrong paint.
This is amazingly awesome! I would never have thought to do that and now that I see the results I'm ashamed to say I would have been someone that would have said you couldn't do it. Wow, it looks great!
Thanks for the great inspiration – Chalk paint is WAY up on my list of things to try in 2012!
Good for you for being so brave and trying it against what everyone said!!! I'd love it if you linked it up to a party I have going on at Project Queen.

Wow, I have to try some of this chalk paint everyone in blog land speaks so highly of. Your chair looks great! Do an update in 6 months for us to know how it's maintaining the paint. Little Bit from DecorateWithaLittleBit.com
Oh Gurl! “I'm in love..I'm in love… And I don't care who knows it!!” (from Elf)
So beautiful!! I want to see it in person!! I think a road trip is coming!!
You're awesome!!
This is so fantastique!!! I love the way it turned out. I have painted leather, with fantastic results. I spray painted a leather chair in silver several years ago and it still looks amazing. That was one of my first posts!
I would love if you could hop over and link this up at my linky party Friday-Sunday. This is a project I know so many people would love to see.
Katie
Isn't Pinterest the best!!!! It is such a time sucker though!!!! So many creative people in the world!

Sure I will try again! I hope it will work! I can't believe you spray painted a chair! That is amazing, not sure I would be daring enough to do that!

You waxed the leather too, right?
Melanie
Sweet! I love things that magically turn out like that–plus, it looks amazing!
I love how it turned out – absolutely fab!!
I did a similar thing for my daughters room recently. I spray painted a vinyl chair that was looking a little sad. No cracking and it looks great!
Just found you and now I'm following.

Yes! After I let the second coat of paint dry, I applied a finishing wax to the chair. Let it dry for about 10 minutes and then buffed. Just like I would have done to a regular piece of furniture!!! It gave it a great real leather look!

Angela
Thanks Steph!
Yes some things just turn out how you pictured it in your head. I think it is God giving me little ideas!

Hi Pinecone
Wow love that name!!!! I would loveeeeeeeeee to see a picture of your daughter's chair!! Any chance?

Angela
Oh I love how it turned out! I'm always type that when someone says it can't be done, I have to prove them wrong.
I have got to get my hands on some chalk paint.
I'm also loving the fabric hanging in the entry to the next room. Remember where you got it?
that is amazing!!
I so have an almost throw away chair that I need to try this paint on. Clearly, there isn't a thing in the world that it cannot do (smile).
Awesome job.

OH MY LAWDY! That is crazy! I love it, your colors and fabrics! My DR is the same pumpkin colah and I love it!
You have to go with your gut…more than not, it's the right move! NIce ta meetcha, BOLD sistah!
NO WAY!!!! First of all, I want to say I'm completely jealous that you can hop over to Nester's house! That is incredibly cool of her to give it to you! Shouldn't surprise me because she is plain AWESOME! Second NO WAY!!!! You used chalk paint to paint the chair!!!! You completely cracked me up with your little convo with DH. I'm sure everyone would have thought I had gone a bit loony if I did the same, but WAY TO GO! Look at what a phenomenal transformation and completely ADORABLE! I didn't need another reason to LOVE chalk paint because I already love it for everything else! This is such a fabulous post! LOVE IT!! Happy to find you via Project Queen. Have to pin this on pinterest now! Happy Monday!

I bought that fabric at a discount fabric place here in town. But I have a piece withthe name Magnolia home Fashion. You could probably google it and find in online.

This just rocks. I looooove ASCP and now I'm looking for a chair to paint with it!!
Please do some periodic updates, will you? I am really curious as to how it looks over time. I think it would be fun to do an intentionally distressed look with a couple of colors, and let it sort of get funkier…
This is awesome! I am ALWAYS picking pieces up from thrift stores, garage sales and making them new again.
I'm wondering if this would work on cotton? Anybody know? Thanks!
Hi, Angela
I love this chair and I was thinking about doing this and wanted to know how the chair is holding up? Also, did you use any wax paste or sealant when the chair was all dry? Thanks.
Vanessa
It has been awhile now that I did that chair and it is holding up perfectly!!!! I love it and will be painting more chairs in the future! I did use a finiahing wax on it when it dried. Same wax that i use on furniture!

Angela
I have many chairs in such condition and I think I will be trying to paint them this weekend. Thanks for sharing this post.
Hi Anurag!
Ohhhhhh take some before and after pictures and share them with me!!! I love a good ole before and after project!! I am happy to report i painted that chair several months ago and it is holding up very nicely!

I’m about to paint two ugly little green vinyl barrel chairs for my daughters room. I googled because I knew someone had probably done this already. Yours came up and WOW, I am so excited to know that it’s holding up well. Could you please tell me what type of brush you used to paint the chair? My concern is brush strokes with the chalk paint and did you need to sand before waxing? I just got AS wax yesterday and cannot wait to try it. Your chair ROCKS!
Hi Pat!
I used a Purdy XL Cab brush from Lowes or home depot. I did two coats of the chalk paint and you cannot see the brush stokes at all! I did not sand the vinyl and I did not wax it after i finished painting. Probably one of the easiest projects I have done! I love my chair and sit in it every morning, it has held up great!
lots of love
Angela
Angela,
Thanks so much for your speedy reply. As fast as it was, I could not wait and jumped right in. One of those ugly little green chairs is now a cute purple (Winter Amethyst – Valspar). I made my own chalk paint with non-sanded grout. It really was rediculous how easy this was. This is my second chalk paint project. Can I just say that chalk paint has changed my life??!!! I hate prep work and now, in most cases, prep is a thing of the past.
You really are very talented and I saw on Nester’s blog where you sell some of your art at Sanctuary in Davidson. I’m in Raleigh and sometimes make my way down to the Charlotte area. Next time I’m down that way, I plan to stop in. Oh, and the quote on your desk…LOVE THAT!!! Thanks for reminding us to stop being afraid and to go ahead and be what we all are capable of being.
Xxxoooo
Pat
I love the chairs and tried Annie paint on a leather ottoman that was in perfect condition. Now I have cracks and peels. Then I used waxed and painted spots. It helped but still peeling and cracking. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Nancy!
Hmmmmmmm, I have no idea! My chair was vinyl instead of leather but I don’t think that should make a difference. How many coats did you do? I did two thin coats of chalk paint, letting the paint dry before adding the second coat. I didn’t do the wax or anything and I haven’t had any problem with cracks. Where is it cracking!?
Angela
Thank you so much for your fast response. It is cracking all over. I peeled the cracking. Then did another light coat and it still cracked. So peeled that used the clear wax. Then painted over the areas again. It is drying now. After it is dry I will do a soft wax again and try to get it to stay. I even mixed color with clear was and put it in the corners to see if it will stay.
I will keep doing peel and light coats with wax. If you have any ideas please let me know.
I also tried Annies paint on a fabric chair and was told it did not get hard. It was super hard so trying to learn fabric paint also.
I am so thankful you have such a nice blog and I found you. Thank you again.
Hi Nancy!
Any luck!?! So chalk paint doesn’t work on fabric chairs!?!? I have been wanting to try it. What does it do? Have you tried fabric paint?
lots of love
Angela
Good morning, I hve not given up on the ottoman. I thinned down the paint to look like really watered down milk. I will keep trying until I get it looking right. It might need about 5 coats of watered down paint to cover the dark brown. I will keep you posted.
Chairs. The dark green velet wing back I am still working on it. I did order some fabric paint and should be here today. The fabric paint I tried along with Annies was all stiff when dried. I water and washed almost everything off and still stiff. I think I am going to start again with a watered down white and use as a primer. Then try to mix some color into the white fabric paint and see if I can cover the dark green and not be stiff.
You are great on a follow up…team work and learning. Thank you
Hi Nancy!
I would love to see some photos when you are done!!
xoxo
Angela
What brand of finishing wax did you use? Spell it out for me – I want to copy you exactly so I CAN WIN!! Someone has an ugly brown vinyl matching couch and chair sitting on their lawn for sale (in the middle of winter, mind you). My crusty heart is dying to buy it and paint giant turquoise and white chevron stripes on it. Grey and white chevron, with one fabulously lonely flo yellow? Must try this now…but alas, all the world is asleep…TOMORROW!!!
Jodie
Go buy it go buy it!!!!!!!!!!!! I love your idea of what you want to do with the furniture!! I didn’t use anything except Annie Sloan chalk paint! Did two coats and am still sitting in it today!!! Send me a photo when you are done!
xoxo
Angela
I think I tripped myself up reading the part about the legs – you put a glaze there and waxed them, is that right? It’s on! I’m after that set!! My husband would not appreciate your encouragement – BUT I DO!!! Total furniture junkie! I collect pieces until my house won’t fit them – and then I find them loving homes
) Where I can still visit!! Thanks for getting back, I’ll let you know how it goes.
Jodie
Good luck and let me know how it goes!
