My grandmother gave the craziest gifts for Christmas. My little brother and I looked forward to each Christmas to see what the other would get. At times we were a little scared. Bottles of half used perfume, golf pins, food from the pantry, or any handmade creation she had come up with! My favorite gift memory was when my little brother was CONVINCED that Mamaw had bought him the latest gaming system that was popular at that time (probably Atari). He stared at that box for hours just knowing she had bought him the gift he was dreaming of. When he was finally allowed to open the present, he ripped off the paper only to find a box full of used golf balls. I fell on the floor and laughed until I cried. I was cruel. Years later my husband and I fell on the floor and laughed until we cried when my brother opened another gift from Mamaw. It was a pair of Kmart acid washed jeans 5 sizes too small and some Old Spice! Poor Steve.

| So you can imagine my curiosity when I received this box from my grandmother for Christmas a few years ago. My great grandfather had made the box for my great grandmother, Lillie. |
My name is Angela Statzer and I love to incorporate just about anything into my artwork. Ranging from recycled materials, vintage items, wood, jewelry, other people’s junk, buttons and fabric, my style is fun and diverse. You can find me smiling at any yard sale, thrift store or flea market. I am a momma to two amazing kids and wife to one hot husband.

Love this post, it reminds me of my Grandmother. She always gave such “interesting” gifts. She passed away six years ago and I think she would have gotten a kick out of the things I now display in my home that were once in her barn.
Yeh, I would prize this at the top too if it was mine! What a lovely lovely gift to receive. That is the most creative and amazing use a a box (or two or three) that I have ever seen! I hope you all had a very merry Christmas!
BTW.. I got the necklace, thanks! It is adorable!
love that box! : ) my great grandmother was a milliner and seamstress in her small MN town and had similar treasures which my mother (who makes costumes for local theater) is still using. She gives my children similar gifts. Kids enjoy anticipation whether it will be “junk drawer surprise” or “playing school” stickers and post-its. Huntley once got duct tape, another time trimmer line.
Oh Mamaw sound like a fun. As long as you knew to expect something eccentric, her gifts brought their own brand of fun and anticipation.
The drawers are fantastic and the contents very exciting. A real treasure of a gift. xx
LOVE this!!! How special! Thanks for sharing this story of your wonderful gift!

Sounds like Mawmaw could take the “queen of regifting” crown that hubs had given his mother. But the gift of the special box of drawers of ric rac is so wonderful! She must have known how appreciated that would be for a crafty recipient like you. I'll bet you treasure it!
