My Eyes Have Been Opened.

I have curly hair.  Not the pretty, Grace Adler kind of curls, but the wild, unruly kind.  When I get my hair cut, my sweet hairdresser always straightens my hair for me.  The other day I had an appointment to get my hair did!  That night I was laying in bed with my five year old son and my super straight hair.  We were under the covers, cuddled up to each other and he said out of the blue, “Where is my puffy hair girl?”  I didn’t think I heard him right so I asked him what he said.  Again, “Where is my puffy hair girl?”  then he said, “I like you with your puffy hair.”  At that moment I realized that that little boy loves his momma no matter what.  He loves me for me, crazy hair and all.  No matter how many times I screw up, no matter how many times I fail or feel defeated, no matter how many times I make mistakes, he loves me.  He loves me, good, bad, and ugly.  Then I started thinking about my relationship with God. If my son loves me so much unconditionally then think how much God must love me regardless of what I do or what I don’t do.  It doesn’t matter how hard I work, how many hours I volunteer or don’t volunteer at the school, if I cuss like a sailor, or if I am super nice or super mean.  He loves me just because I am me.  It had been somewhat of a bad day, but all of a sudden I felt so much love and nothing really mattered except being that little boy’s momma and a child of God.

So I intended to do a post today on how to make lovely lavender eye pillows.  Since my son opened my eyes to the love and grace all around me, it actually still kinda fits! These make super great gifts, are easy and inexpensive to make, and will relax you when you have finished making them!

Cut fabric into a 9 inch by 5 inch piece.  I cut out 10 because these are a big seller at Sanctuary!

Pin your top fabric to your bottom fabric, right sides together.

Sew a half inch seam around the eye pillow except for a two inch opening.  This will be where you turn your eye pillow right side out.

Before you turn your eye pillow right side out, cut off excess fabric.

Flip eye pillow right side out though opening.

I totally forgot what this thing is called.  It is used to push your corners out and make them all pretty.  You can use anything pointy, but be careful not to push all the way though.

Once you have them turned right side out, iron.

You don’t have to do this, but I always topstitch to give it a more completed professional look.  Topstitch all the way around except at the opening.
You will need 1 cup of rice and 2 tablespoons of dried lavender per eye pillow.  I get my lavender at Earth Fare or any whole foods store.  If you do not have a funnel, make one out of construction paper.  Using your funnel, add the rice and lavender mixture to the eye pillow though the opening.  Sew up the opening and you are done!

Use at room temperature or from the freezer to sooth irritated eyes.  Heat in the microwave to melt away tension headaches.
Enjoy!

Fabulous project!! I have crazy curly hair too…try the Deva Curl product line, it's my new best friend :) Don't you just love how God speaks to you…even through the voice of a 5 year old about hair opinions!? Just another reminder that He is truly with us always and can use anything as an example to prove his love :)

What a great idea – I'm definitely making these for Christmas presents this year. And – from a girl with stick straight baby fine hair – I would DIE for your curls!! They are beautiful! And the truth that God loves us just as we are…even more beautiful. Thanks for the reminder!

I was lured to your site by the amazing leather chair you painted. I have curly, curly hair, and love, love garage sales. I wish I didn't live thousands of miles from you-it would be fun to be your friend. I admire how comfortable you are with color- it's something I've been working on bit by bit the past two years. So glad to have found your site!

I love your blog. I love all of your ideas! I’m making 22 of these eye pillows to give to friends this Christmas and my ten year old daughter made two on her own to give to her teachers. Thank you so much for the idea and the directions!

I hope you don’t mind if I point out that the word you want on your tag is soothe. Sooth (without an e) is a different word. I copied your words when we made our own tags and noticed it then.

Thank you again! You are fabulous!
